Swim Wales has issued the following statement in response to the Welsh Government’s decision to place the country into Coronavirus Alert Level 2 from 6am on 26th December 2021.

While the latest measures will cause disruption to aquatics across the country, we hope they have the desired outcome to curb the spread of the Omicron variant whilst allowing leisure facilities to remain open.

The Welsh Government announcement is available here, ac yn Cymraeg yma

Swim Wales attended a call this afternoon with Welsh Government ministers, Welsh Sports Association and colleagues across the Welsh sporting landscape, where we asked for clarification on a number of issues. We are awaiting Welsh Government guidance and FAQs to follow in the coming days and in light of the revisions to alert level 2, we will update our return to water guidance as soon as possible.

Welsh Government modelling suggests Omicron infections will peak in the middle of January, however no end date has been set for these restrictions and the usual 3 weekly review will take place.

Our sector has shown a tremendous level of resilience in the face of unprecedented uncertainty over the last two years and we will continue to collaborate and advocate for aquatics and all of our stakeholders.

We wish you a safe and healthy festive period and look forward to our nation continuing to be aquatically active into the new year.
