Swim Wales Statement regarding Welsh Government National Restrictions Update

To all of our stakeholders,

I wanted to address the announcement from the First Minister of Wales yesterday regarding post firebreak regulations and restrictions, and specifically the issue of ‘’15 in indoor spaces’’.

Put simply, Swim Wales see this change as a huge backward step. Discussions pre firebreak were focussed on a permanent amendment to regulations to include the 100 sq. ft. per person (UK Active guidance) across all pools and leisure centres. After hearing about this proposed change yesterday on the national news we urgently repurposed our scheduled discussions with Welsh Government and Sport Wales.

Our own intelligence tells us that 25% of users (150,000 people) have returned to leisure centres since August with less than 10 cases reported in 3 months of opening (0.01%) In addition to this we are constantly stressing the point that activity and sport is part of the solution. This country is losing the fight with obesity and increasing potential for wider mental issues in the population and aquatic activity as with other physical activity needs to be CLASSED AS ESSENTIAL SERVICES.

We will of course update you all as soon as we have further clarity on this or any related news.

Please continue to stay safe and well,

Fergus Feeney
