The Skills Academy is a comprehensive development programme for swimmers aged 11–14 (11–15 for para-swimmers), coaches, and parents. The Academy focuses on techniques, winning behaviours, and pathway education.

Led by Commonwealth Games gold medalist Alys Thomas, the Academy is designed to support athletes as they transition from Development into Performance programmes.

Swimmers and coaches benefit from pool sessions covering techniques, while also gaining valuable insights into long-term success habits. These skills and behaviours not only underpin the sport but can help young swimmers develop in other areas of their lives.

The Academy has already held its first two sessions delivered across the South West and West hubs. The first official session took place at the Wales National Pool, Swansea, on Sunday 23rd February 2025, followed by the second at Carmarthen Leisure Centre on Sunday 2nd March.

Swimmers responded positively to the experience. One participant said, “I enjoyed learning the diving techniques, this will really help me in my races,” while another added, I enjoyed learning how I can improve my dives and I felt much more confident by the end.”

Parents and coaches also found value in the day. “This is a great opportunity for young people to meet with successful swimmers and to understand the pathway — this is done in an amazing, friendly atmosphere,” said one parent. Another commented, “Watching the swimmers break down the dive drills and listening to the insights and advice from the athletes was truly inspiring.”

Alys Thomas reflected on the impact of the first sessions: “It’s been great to see how engaged the swimmers, coaches, and parents have been so far. The Academy is here to support everyone involved in the athlete journey, and it’s exciting to see it starting to take shape.”

The Skills Academy will continue its rollout across Wales in a roadshow-style format, making it easier for clubs and swimmers in all regions to access. The next sessions will be held in the South Hub and East Hub — details will be coming soon.

Clubs can nominate swimmers who demonstrate aspiration, a strong attitude, regular attendance, and a registered 200m Individual Medley time. Coaches and parents are also encouraged to attend, with dedicated workshops and networking opportunities available.
