Swim Wales are excited to share that Heathwood Swimming Academy have launched the Learn to Swim Wales framework in their learn to swim programme.

Heathwood Swimming was launched as an innovative swimming coaching business by Dave Tonge, a multi-talented Aquatic professional and Ironman. Initially starting in Dave’s own Endless Pool in his garage, Heathwood Swimming has grown and expanded,  and is now based in South Point Industrial Estate, Cardiff – which contains 2 Endless Pools and a larger 7.5m x 2.5m swimming pool that is now offering learn to swim lessons for children.

The teaching team also includes Ann Tonge, who was recipient of Swim Wales’ Outstanding Contribution to Aquatics in Wales Award in 2020 and Sheila Mott – two legendary Cardiff based swimming teachers who some people might remember from the Wales Empire Pool.

Learn to Swim Wales is an assessment and awards Framework supported by Welsh Assembly Government, which was devised by Swim Wales in association with Sport Wales and leisure providers. The Framework covers all vital skills required for participation in aquatic activities and disciplines, starting with Bubbles - Adult and Child water confidence classes through to Skills - early competitive participation in aquatic clubs and fitness participation and an Adult learn to swim framework. The programme incorporates all of the recognised FUNdamental movement and aquatic skills, the four strokes and skills of water competence. The Learn to Swim Wales Framework aims to ensure that regardless of any differential factors or circumstances every child can learn to swim and therefore have the opportunity to choose aquatic activities as a part of a healthy lifestyle.

Heathwood Swimming’s, Dave Tonge said, “We are proud to have launched the Learn to Swim Wales framework in our swimming lesson programme. Our swimmers are progressing really quickly through the Wave assessment outcomes with only 4 children in our small group sessions. We’ve recently sent 3 swimmers for City of Cardiff SC trials and they’ve been successful in gaining a place.

National Learn to Swim Manager for Swim Wales, Hanna Guise said, “We are delighted to welcome Heathwood Academy to our family of Learn to Swim Wales providers. It has been fantastic to observe the growth of Heathwood Swimming, and Swim Wales are grateful for the work of Dave and his team in supporting and inspiring so many people to learn and participate in aquatic activities. We are excited to work with Heathwood Swimming and Heathwood Academy to help and support them in further developing their learn to swim opportunities.”

Providers interested in utilising the Learn to Swim Wales framework in their programme can contact Swim Wales Aquatic Development and our experienced and passionate team will discuss everything in more detail with you - aquaticdevelopment@swimming.org.
