Swim Wales and Welsh Triathlon are excited to announce the launch of S.A.F.E Cymru, a brand new accreditation for open water facilities in Wales.

S.A.F.E Cymru is an accreditation that has been developed with partners for partners, and is built on decades of our own experience and invaluable feedback from operators and end customers. Our world class accreditation will help all facilities further promote and progress open water swimming safely and provide the necessary resources and standards which facilities need to meet to ensure safeparticipation in Wales.

‘’Since 2020 we have seen a 45% increase in people taking part in open water swimming across the UK and particularly in Wales. Many individuals taking part in open water swimming are seeing a benefit to their health and wellbeing but it is vital that we have the appropriate measures in place for people to access safe accredited facilities. This accreditation has been developed by Swim Wales in partnership with Welsh Triathlon and is recognised as the pinnacle of safe aquatic facility standards in Wales.’’ Fergus Feeney (Swim Wales CEO)

S.A.F.E Cymru will aim to promote safety and enjoyment in open water swimming through four key strategic objectives:

  • Safe Facilities: A national governing body accreditation designed with a supportive and continuous assessment process.
  • Advice & Guidance: The latest up to date information, support and advice from national governing bodies on open water swimming for participants at all levels.
  • Education & Training: A fully resourced and expansive training programme to support both the operational workforce at facilities and our participants at all levels.
  • Participation: A clear pathway in Wales that helps our nation enjoy, participate, learn and compete in open water swimming.

‘’We are delighted to be the first facility in Wales to achieve the new S.A.F.E Cymru accreditation. This has been achieved through our close working relationship with Swim Wales and Welsh Triathlon. Safely managed, controlled open water swimming at Llandegfedd Lake will be a welcome addition to our existing watersports offer and is an important milestone in Welsh Water’s journey to become accessible hubs for health, wellbeing and recreation. We look forward to rolling this out across our national portfolio of visitor attractions later in the year.’’ Owen Davies (Activity Manager for Llandegfedd Watersports Centre, Welsh Water)

It is hoped by the end of 2021 that there will be up to fifteen S.A.F.E Cymru accredited manned facilities in Wales, each allowing affordable and safe access to open water swimming. In time the programme will be introduced to the many unmanned locations open water swimmers access in Wales.

‘’Welsh Triathlon are delighted to play our part in bringing S.A.F.E Cymru to life, working with collaborative partners to ensure our waters are safe and accessible. There is a magic about swimming outdoors which triathletes have appreciated for many years. It is good to know many people across Wales will be able to benefit from accredited facilities with safety and enjoyment at their heart.’’ Beverley Lewis (Welsh Triathlon CEO)

S.A.F.E Cymru will be introduced to facility partners across Wales on the rolling bases starting on the 10th May 2021. For further information about S.A.F.E Cymru please contact safe-cymru@swimming.org or Hope Filby on 07970 117 500
